Well we are using it for a remote starter and emergency stopper for a
golf cart sized robotic vehicle.  We use 2 of the 4 transmission bits, 
as input into the main controller to allow a sortof remote control for 
it (Faster, Slower, Right, Left) and another for the system starter and
stopper.  It latches the output on the 4 data pins so if you wanted to 
use it for data communication, one of the pins have to be a sync line/clock.  
Before the device latches the data pins it matches the transmission code 
to the settings on the receiver.  The signal has to be stable for a 
fraction of a second before the data pins are latched.  This is good if 
you are using it for a controller like we are, but if you use it for 
data communication it really sucks.  We were able to start and stop the 
vehicle reliably at about 130 ft., but you needed to transmit the signal 
for about 1 second before you would get a response from the receiver.  
The device also has a relay output in case you wanted to drive
something with it.  You should be able to increase the distance by going
to a full wave antenna on the reveiver, we were just using the 1/4 wave
that came with it and the PCB trace antenna on the Transmitter.
