IEEE Trans. Robotics and Automation, in the new June 1994 issue,
has a paper on a breakthrough in this area: the "Spherical Pointing
Motor". Three coils drive a permanent magnet in two axes. Runs
open-loop. Carries 15g, rotational speeds to several hundred degrees/sec,
repeatable to 0.15 degree. Used with a CCD chip and fixed lens.
Will probably be cheap, but not a product yet. Developed at
Bell Communications Research / Courant / Boston U. Covered by
U.S. patent #5,204,573.
