If you need something thats cheap, try a Radio Shack walkie-talkie.

There cheap and will transmit about 150 yards with out any trouble.

Forcing the push-to-talk switch on for the transmit side and recieve at
the other end. I am sure you can find a simple oscilator circuit and a
phase-lock-loop detector for the digital data. You may even be able to use
a cheap 2400 baud modem chip set.

I see you are in the UK, so Im sure you can find a cheap walkie-talkie
from any larger department store.
