Why don't you try the MCS51 / MCS52 family of microcontrolers?

They have paralel IO, Serial port, internal RAM, are able to address 64k RAM
and 64k Code (different memories so you can have up to 128K < RAM + ROM >)

  They are really cheap
(8032 from Intel costs the equivalent to 2 dollars in Portugal)

They are nice to program in assembler, there are versions with built in prom
with a basic interpreter (truly a one chip computer!- just connect the power,
the cristal and a RS232 driver and you are on the go)
