II. Books and literature

"Getting Started in Electronics", Forrest Mimms (Radio Shack).

"Engineer's Notebook II: Integrated Circuit Applications", Forrest Mimms
(Radio Shack--may be out of print).

"Semiconductor Reference Guide" (Radio Shack)

Radio Shack has numerous other books related to electronics.

"The Robot Book", Richard Pawson, Windward, 1985, 192 pages. (Utilizes
Lego kits.)

"Mobile Robots: Inspiration to Implementation" by J. Jones and A. Flynn,
AK Peters, Ltd.

Description of book (paraphrase of Jones' post in comp.robotics):

"Mobile Robots" is a book about how to design and build your own mobile
robot. The book begins with a tutorial robot that readers can build
from LEGO and electronic components available at Radio shack.
It continues with sections on microprocessors and assembly language
programming, designing and prototyping, sensors, mechanical systems, motors
and motor driver circuitry, batteries and power regulation, and robot
programming including subsumption architecture. And, since you can't build
a robot if you can't find the parts, there is an extensive appendix which
contains a cross referenced list of parts and suppliers. The book comes
down firmly on the practical end of the spectrum, there are lots of
example circuits and programs. The examples are centered around another
robot, called Rug Warrior. Rug Warrior is based on a microprocessor
(the MC68HC11); by following the schematics and example readers should be
able to construct their own version of the robot.
