SCARA is an acronym for "selectively compliant arm for robotic assembly".
The classic design has 4 degrees of freedom; two horizontal rotatary links
connected to a vertical sliding link that can also rotate, the Adept is a
modern example. They are compliant in the horizontal plane which makes them
useful for pick and place assembly tasks where the complexity and expense
of a full six degree of freedom arm is unnecessary.
