:Right now, the architecture of Tk depends to some extent on on X being
:underneath. To be honest, I don't know enough about Tk to have more

Nope - the MacOS and Windows version do not require having X underneath.

:than a vague idea of why this is, but it's certainly a widely-held
:opinion. Right now, the Mac and PC versions of Tk are rather hacked,

Apparently a mistaken one.

:so they work, but they have a Motif look and feel. The Tcl/Tk group

'hacked'? They do have a Motif look and feel - but that's not necessarily
a hack. To give each version a native look and feel, one needs to invoke
the appropriate local windowing software for the widgets, etc. That's
what is being worked on. I would expect to see something within 6 months.

:upon which it runs (they also plan on making it backwards compatible
:with the current implementation), but we probably won't see anything

It already is backwards compatible.

Note also that several efforts to build language independant versions of
Tk have been, and at least one more is currently, worked on.
