Please, explain how subroutines available from the Scheme Repository
satisfy a request that STk include these operations as primitives?

I don't care if they're implemented in Scheme or C, the important thing
is that they be available in any random STk or S without Tk display code
so you can use them in scripts without invoking a plethora of inclusions.

Remember, you need to support one-off quick-and-dirty scripts as well as
large programs.

(regular expressions are handy, too, but the main thing is that Scheme
doesn't like eating text files without a nice long runup to work up an
 appetite)
