In the recent discussion regarding the possible use of Scheme as a
replacement for Tcl/Tk it has been mentioned that Scheme's lack of
an Algol like syntax would prevent it from becoming a suitable
replacement.

I recall seeing such a pre-processor mentioned in this newsgroup earlier
this year. I can't recall for sure but I think that it was called CTalk
or something like that and it was from someone in France. I also remember
that the Scheme interpreter that was being used was a threaded interpreter
(like Forth); and because of this supposedly gave very good performance.

My question is: does anyone know what I'm talking about and what is the
current status of said package?

Maybe ML (or at least an ML like preprocessor) could receive
acceptance from the masses.
