Actually it isn't.  If I remember correctly, a fixed-with font of
certain characteristics is requested.  On our development system, a
perfectly reasonable was chosen (I often switched it with a smaller
one to fit more stuff in).  I don't know why it chooses a tiny one on
other systems.
