One thing I see right away is that the versions used are all pretty old -
and we have no idea how they were compiled (with what level of optimization,
etc.), with what compilers, etc.


Note that you left the Perl 4.0.1.8 reference out of the above paragraph.

The latest release versions are:
GNU C++ 3.0.x, GNU awk 3.0.x, Perl 5.0001m, Python 1.3, Tcl 7.4

I don't follow the other versions, so I am unaware if they have newer
versions or not.
