What is the most efficient way to find out the convex hull of a group
of polygons ? Those polygons could be concave or convex.
Once the convex hull is found, what is the best way to find out the shortest
bounding rectangle which encloses this convex hull ?

Request to drum up support for a reprinting of:

	Hermann von Helmoltz - Treatise on Physiological Optics

Sometime ago, the Dover Press reprinted in a 2-volume paperback edition a
translation of Helmholtz' seminal 3-volume treatise.  As most of you know,
this work prefigures much of the work in Vision Science that we do today.
It is certainly an important book to provide historical context, if not to
discover that what we are doing has already been done long before!  Dover has
let the book go out of print for some years, there are no copies left at
the Press, and it is quite difficult to find used copies.  Therefore, I am
trying to convince Dover to reprint the books.  To do that, I need to convince
them that sufficient numbers of people will go out and buy copies once they
become available.  Therefore, if you would consider buying these books if they
became available again (note that Dover paperbacks tend to be inexpensive),
please email me a short note saying that you are interested, and, in case this
turns out to be useful for an announcement later on, providing me with an
email and postal address.

image. Specular reflection causes a region of image saturated or at very
high intensity, which may pose difficulties for subsequent image processing.

Subject: Mobal Robot Vision Help

   Hi, I am 17 and working on my forth + 200 lb. robot. I would like to 
add a real time vision system, and was wondering if anyone has done this? 
I would like the robot able to fiend electrical outlets and Coca-Cola 
cans, I would also like the robot to be able to plug it's self in and 
pick up the cans. To lighten the data load I am planing to digitize the 
image and then run the image through a edge detection algorithm. Is this 
possible? Could this be done with a 50 mhz 486? If you can give me some 
help, let me know. P.S. I need to do this with as little money as possible.

for several post-doctorate research positions in the areas of im-
age  processing,  computer vision, object recognition, artificial
intelligence, and machine learning.  Applicants for  these  posi-
tions should have a PhD in a related area, with a strong interest
in solid scientific  work,  self-motivation,  good  communication
skills, and the ability to work in a team.  Good computing skills
and experience with C, C++, LISP, UNIX, and tools like Khoros and
KBVision would be valuable.

Successful candidates will participate in research projects  sup-
ported  by the U.S. government and industry.  These positions are

General Information:

Syntactic and structural pattern recognition encompasses all aspects
of pattern recognition that are related to the structure and/or syntax 
of the patterns under consideration as a basis for their recognition.

SSPR'94 is the fifth workshop in a series of workshops organized by 
the Technical Committee on SSPR of the International Association for 
Pattern Recognition (IAPR), and held traditionally in conjunction with 
the large IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR), 
held in October 1994 in Jerusalem.

The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussing
issues related to syntactic and structural pattern recognition.
These issues include, but are not limited to, the following issues:

* General methodology.
* Machine learning and grammatical inference.
* Structured document image analysis: handwriting, maps, technical drawings.
* Speech and one-dimensional signal analysis.
* Structural methods in image processing.
* Shape analysis.
* Structural methods in computer vision.
 
We solicit contributions of two types:
* Research papers (extended abstracts limited to 10 double-spaced pages)
* Position papers (about any of the relevant issues).
 
The workshop will feature paper presentations, discussions and
panels based on position papers submitted, and invited speakers.
 
The abstracts of the papers will appear in a conference proceedings.
The papers presented at the Workshop will be published in a book format.

LOCATION

The venue of the Workshop will be in Karlton Hotel, Nahariya.
Nahariya is a Mediteranean resort town, 40 minutes drive north of Haifa.
The weather in October is very nice and a tour to high-tech industry and 
a number of touristic attractions in the Galilee is planned.

* software architectures and hierarchies

Systems integration, including:
* design aids and "advisors" for system design and configuration: optics,
  lighting, processor interconnection, I/O, etc.
* design aids and "advisors" for algorithm development, target system
  programming, and system documentation
* improved interfaces for system designers and integrators
* factory-floor interfaces for nonexpert users
* on-line applications of "intelligent" systems, neural nets etc.

                               AIM AND SCOPE

Following the success of previous EXPERSYS Conferences organized in France
and in the USA, the Sixth International EXPERSYS-94 will be held in
Houston, Texas (USA) on December 1-2, 1994. It will bring together
scientists, engineers, and industrial professionals from different parts of
the world, working both on fundamental aspects as well as industrial
applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems. The
international conference committee invites you to submit a paper on the
following topics (but not limited to): 

                            TOPICS OF INTEREST

Artificial intelligence and expert systems applications in science,
engineering, architecture, environment, business and finance, law,
aerospace, military, telecommunications, and knowledge management and
processing. Specific topics of previous conferences have covered ES in
chemistry and biology, real time processing, manufacturing, CAD/CAM,
automation, robotics, cost-benefit analysis, modeling, as well as
development environments, verification and validation of ES. Other topics
have also been AI interfaces, knowledge representation and processing,
neural networks, fuzzy logic, speech recognition and natural language
processing, intelligent software and hardware. New and innovative
applications of AI and ES are highly encouraged. 

                       CALL FOR CONTRIBUTED PAPERS

Authors are requested to submit three copies of abstract (350 words
maximum) by April 1, 1994 to:

All abstracts and final papers will be reviewed by the International
Advisory Committee. Notification of acceptance of abstracts will be mailed
by May 1, 1994. 

                       CALL FOR INVITED SESSIONS

Authors are encouraged to organize a session in the topics relevant to the
Conference. Interested session organizers are requested to submit a
proposal, including the title of the session, title of articles, and a list
of participating authors and their affiliations by March 15, 1994 to the
conference general chairman. Interested session organizers are encouraged
to discuss their proposals with the conference general chairman as soon as
possible.

         will be arranged and hosted by NASA/JSC on December 3, 1994. 
         Attendees will also visit Space Center Houston.
         Tour fee doesn't include lunch.
