LTN12 based compression?

Hello,

I would like to compress (gzip) some random piece of data.

I stumbled upon Kepler's LuaZip, but is seems to be exclusively file 
oriented, is that right?

Does anyone know of a gzip binding for Lua more along the lines of 
LTN12 (source, sink, etc)?
