Magnetic Design of a Superconducting Toroidal Gantry for Hadron Therapy / Felcini, Enrico (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; Dutoit, Bertrand (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
Hadron and proton therapy are cutting edge techniques for cancer treatment and a great development of specialized medical centers and research facilities is foreseen in the next decades. One of the main obstacles to the penetration of the use of charged particles for therapy is the construction of complex and expensive accelerating structures and rotating transfer lines, i.e., gantries, able to bend and focus the beam down to the patient. Design of the First HTS Single-Coil Demonstrator of GaToroid Toroidal Gantry for Hadron Therapy / Felcini, Enrico (CERN) ; Harray, Jerome (CERN) ; Lehtinen, Tuukka (CERN) ; Perini, Diego (CERN) ; Perez, Juan C (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Dutoit, Bertrand (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN)
The design and construction of compact and lightweight gantries for hadron therapy are essential steps toward wider accessibility to this cancer treatment. The use of a high-field steady-state toroidal gantry, i.e., GaToroid, represents an attractive alternative to the state-of-the-art with the potential of significantly reducing size and weight of present installations. Feasibility Study of GaToroid Gantries for Carbon Ions / Felcini, E (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; CNAO, Milan) ; Haziot, A (CERN) ; Louzguiti, A (CERN ; CEA Cadarache) ; Lehtinen, T (CERN) ; Vernassa, G (CERN) ; Dutoit, B (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bottura, L (CERN)
The use of carbon ions in particle therapy can enhance the treatment quality, introducing higher biological effectiveness compared to photons and protons. Rotating gantries are nowadays used to deliver particle beams from different directions to obtain precise conformal dose mapping at the tumor location. [...]

Magnetic Design of a Compact GaToroid for Very High Energy Electron and Pre-Clinical Hadron Beams / Bottura, L (CERN) ; Haziot, A (CERN) ; Latina, A (CERN) ; Both, S (Groningen U.) ; Gerbershagen, A (Groningen U.) ; Butler, Ch (Oxford U.) ; Dosanjh, M (Oxford U.) ; Leadley, S (Oxford U.) ; Robertson, C (Oxford U.)
GaToroid is a novel configuration of a beam delivery system for charged particles therapy based on a steady-state, axis-symmetric field configuration. The basic idea is to use fixed toroidal magnets, producing an axis-symmetric (or periodical axis-symmetric) field configuration that can bend beams from several directions onto the patient location. Beam optics studies for GaToroid / Oponowicz, Ewa (speaker) (CERN)
Abstract: GaToroid is a novel concept of a beam delivery system for hadron therapy. It comprises toroidal magnets to bend and focus the beam onto the patient location from a discrete number of directions. [...]

GaToroid: A novel toroidal gantry for hadron therapy / Bottura, L (CERN) ; Felcini, E (CERN) ; De Rijk, G (CERN) ; Dutoit, B (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
We describe here a novel concept of a gantry for hadron therapy, based on the use of a toroidal field configuration. The main features of this concept are that the gantry is not rotating, and is operated in steady-state We propose that is built based on superconducting magnets, reaching field levels not achievable using normal conducting iron-dominated magnets. Particle tracking and beam optics analysis on a toroidal gantry for proton therapy / Felcini, E (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Gerbershagen, A (CERN) ; van Nugteren, J (CERN) ; Dutoit, B (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
GaToroid is a concept of toroidal gantry for hadron therapy under investigation at CERN It makes use of the toroidal magnetic field between each pair of coils to steer and focus the particle beams down to the patient. This peculiar concept requires detailed studies on particle tracking and beam optics to optimise the winding geometry and explore the properties of the system. [...]

EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS IN MEDICAL APPLICATIONS @ CERN – SHORT TALKS
Discover how technological advances for high-energy physics have become essential tools for modern medicine.  This series of short talks is given by Early-Career Researchers working on projects related to diverse medical applications that arise from technology developed at CERN and in high-energy physics. In this seminar 2 ECRs working on the GaToroid project will share their work. GaToroid is part of the Next Ion Medical Machine Study (NIMMS) project which outlines an umbrella R&D programme for the development of critical accelerator technologies related to ion therapy; the programme builds on existing activities and on core CERN competences.   The GaToroid project aims to develop a new type of gantry for hadron therapy. The novel concept defined in 2017 by Luca Bottura uses the axis-symmetry from a toroidal field to bend the beam and deliver it to the patient from several directions [...]
