Calculation of the allowed aperture for a gas storage cell in IP8 / Boscolo Meneguolo, Caterina (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Ferro-Luzzi, Massimiliano (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
In the framework of the Physics Beyond Collider studies, a working group was created in order to study some specific proposals to perform fixed-target physics experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. Among these proposals, the possibility has been described of installing an internal gas target, injecting unpolarized or polarized gas inside a storage cell (SC) located around the beam, close to the LHCb detector. [...]

Study of beam-gas interactions at the LHC for the Physics Beyond Colliders fixed-target study / Boscolo Meneguolo, Caterina (CERN ; U. Padua (main)) ; Abramov, Andrey (JAI, UK) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Ferro-Luzzi, Massimiliano (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Molson, James (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
Among several working groups formed in the framework of the Physics Beyond Colliders study, launched at CERN in September 2016, there is one investigating specific fixed-target experiment proposals. Of particular interest is the study of high-density unpolarized or polarized gas targets to be installed in the LHC, upstream of the LHCb detector, using storage cells to enhance the target density. "A proposal for an upgraded version of the existing gas injection system for the LHCb experiment (SMOG) is presented. The core idea of the project, called SMOG2, is the use of a storage cell for the injected gas to be installed upstream of the VELO detector [...]

Optimization of Triplet Quadrupoles Field Quality for the LHC High Luminosity Lattice at Collision Energy / Nosochkov, Y (SLAC) ; Cai, Y (SLAC) ; Wang, MH (SLAC) ; Fartoukh, S (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; de Maria, R (CERN) ; McIntosh, E (CERN)
Beta functions at two interaction points (IP) in the high luminosity LHC upgrade lattice (HL-LHC) at collision energy will be significantly reduced compared to the nominal LHC lattice. This will result in much higher beta functions in the inner triplet (IT) quadrupoles adjacent to these IPs. [...]

New measurements in fixed-target collisions at LHCb / Mariani, Saverio (INFN, Florence) /LHCb Collaboration
Owing to the injection of noble gases into the LHC accelerator beam-pipe at CERN, LHCb is developing a full-scale fixed-target experiment studying collisions of protons and lead ions on gas atoms at the as of today’s highest energy ever reached in a fixed-target experiment. Such a scale, intermediate between the past experiments and the LHC ones, is mostly unexplored and the accessible physics prospects, addressing different fields of interest among which nucleon characterization and astrophysics, are unique at the LHC. Extending the physics reach of the fixed-target programme at the LHCb experiment / Lucarelli, Chiara
Exploiting the forward geometry of its spectrometer, along with its excellent tracking and particle identification performance, the LHCb experiment at CERN has been conducting a pioneering fixed-target physics programme since 2015, studying collisions between the LHC beams and injected gaseous targe [...]
