Quantification of radioisotopes produced in 1.4 GeV proton irradiated lead–bismuth eutectic targets / Choudhury, Dibyasree (Saha Inst.) ; Lahiri, Susanta (Saha Inst. ; HBNI, Mumbai) ; Naskar, Nabanita (Saha Inst.) ; Delonca, Melanie (CERN) ; Stora, Thierry (CERN) ; Ramos, Joao Pedro (CERN ; SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Aubert, Elodie (CERN) ; Dorsival, Alexandre (CERN) ; Vollaire, Joachim (CERN) ; Augusto, Ricardo (CERN ; Munich U. ; TRIUMF) et al.
Six cylindrical lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) targets having fixed diameter of 6 mm and varying lengths of 8–50 mm were irradiated with a 1.4 GeV proton beam at CERN-ISOLDE. Both short-lived ($5\hbox { h } {<}\hbox {T}_{1/2} {<}5\hbox { days}$) and long-lived ($\hbox {T}_{1/2} {>}5\hbox { days}$) radionuclides were identified by off-line $\gamma $-spectrometry and their activities at the end of bombardment (EOB) were determined. Measurement of Volatile Radionuclides Production and Release Yields followed by a Post-Irradiation Analysis of a Pb/Bi Filled Ta Target at ISOLDE / Zanini, L (ESS, Lund) ; Köster, U (Laue-Langevin Inst.) ; David, J C (IRFU, SPhN, Saclay) ; Tall, Y (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Andersson, M (PSI, Villigen) ; Berg, K (PSI, Villigen) ; Cormon, S (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Fallot, M (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Foucher, Y (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Frånberg, H (GANIL) et al.
A crucial requirement in the development of liquid-metal spallation neutron target is knowledge of the composition and amount of volatile radionuclides that are released from the target during operation. It is also important to know the total amount produced, which could be released if there was an accident. [...]

CFD analysis and optimization of a liquid lead–bismuth loop target for ISOL facilities / Houngbo, D (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Popescu, L (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Schuurmans, P (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Delonca, M (CERN) ; Losito, R (CERN) ; Maglioni, C (CERN) ; Stora, T (CERN) ; Bricault, P (TRIUMF) ; Vierendeels, J (U. Gent (main))
In the context of the forthcoming next generation of Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs) facilities based on an Isotope Separation On Line (ISOL) method, the development of production targets capable of dissipating the high power deposited by the primary beam is a major challenge. The concept of a high-power target based on a liquid Pb–Bi loop incorporating a heat-exchanger and a diffusion chamber was proposed within EURISOL DS and is being developed within the LIEBE1 project. The evaporation behavior of polonium as one of the most hazardous radionuclides produced in spallation based neutron sources with liquid lead-bismuth targets has been quantified in this study. The normalized apparent vapor pressure, i.e. [...]

Post-irradiation analysis of the tantalum container of an ISOLDE LBE target / Noah, E (CERN) ; Boutellier, V (PSI, Villigen) ; Bruetsch, R (PSI, Villigen) ; Catherall, R (CERN) ; Gavillet, D (PSI, Villigen) ; Krbanjevic, J (EPFL, Lausanne) ; Linder, H P (PSI, Villigen) ; Martin, M (PSI, Villigen) ; Neuhausen, J (PSI, Villigen) ; Schumann, D (PSI, Villigen) et al.
CERN-ISOLDE operates a range of oxides, carbides, refractory metal foils and liquid metal targets for the production of radioactive ion beams. Following irradiation with a pulsed beam of 1 GeV and 1.4 GeV protons at temperatures reaching 600 degrees C, the tantalum container of a liquid lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) target was examined. [...]

Production of Sm-153 With Very High Specific Activity for Targeted Radionuclide Therapy / Van de Voorde, Michiel (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Duchemin, Charlotte (Leuven U. ; CERN) ; Heinke, Reinhard (Leuven U. ; CERN) ; Lambert, Laura (CERN) ; Chevallay, Eric (CERN) ; Schneider, Thomas (CERN) ; Van Stenis, Miranda (CERN) ; Cocolios, Thomas Elias (Leuven U.) ; Cardinaels, Thomas (SCK-CEN, Mol ; Leuven U.) ; Ponsard, Bernard (SCK-CEN, Mol) et al.
Samarium-153 ($^{153}$Sm) is a highly interesting radionuclide within the field of targeted radionuclide therapy because of its favorable decay characteristics. $^{153}$Sm has a half-life of 1.93 d and decays into a stable daughter nuclide ($^{153}$Eu) whereupon β − particles [E = 705 keV (30%), 635 keV (50%)] are emitted which are suitable for therapy. Exploring the Potential of High-Molar-Activity Samarium-153 for Targeted Radionuclide Therapy with [$^{153}$Sm]Sm-DOTA-TATE / Vermeulen, Koen (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Van de Voorde, Michiel (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Segers, Charlotte (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Coolkens, Amelie (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Pérez, Sunay Rodriguez (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Daems, Noami (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Duchemin, Charlotte (Leuven U. ; CERN) ; Crabbé, Melissa (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Opsomer, Tomas (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Vargas, Clarita Saldarriaga (SCK-CEN, Mol) et al.
Samarium-153 is a promising theranostic radionuclide, but low molar activities (Am) resulting from its current production route render it unsuitable for targeted radionuclide therapy (TRNT). Recent efforts combining neutron activation of $^{152}$Sm in the SCK CEN BR2 reactor with mass separation at CERN/MEDICIS yielded high-Am $^{153}$Sm. [...]

High Power Molten Targets for Radioactive Ion Beam Production: from Particle Physics to Medical Applications / De Melo Mendonca, T M (CERN)
Megawatt-class molten targets, combining high material densities and good heat transfer properties are being considered for neutron spallation sources, neutrino physics facilities and radioactive ion beam production. For this last category of facilities, in order to cope with the limitation of long diffusion times affecting the extraction of short-lived isotopes, a lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) target loop equipped with a diffusion chamber has been proposed and tested offline during the EURISOL design study.
