The CERN SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) serves as LHC injector and provides beam for the North Area fixed target experiments. Since the 2016 run automated local aperture scans have been performed with the main focus on the vertical plane where limitations typically arise due to the flat vacuum chambers in most SPS elements. Lifetime and Beam Losses Studies of Partially Strip Ions in the SPS ($^{129}$Xe$^{39+}$)

The CERN multipurpose Gamma Factory proposal relies on using Partially Stripped Ion (PSI) beams, instead of electron beams, as the drivers of its light source. If such beams could be successfully stored in the LHC ring, fluxes of the order of $10^{17}$ photons/s, in the $\gamma$-ray energy domain of $1 \leq \rm{E}_{\gamma} \leq 400$ MeV could be achieved. [...]

Performance of the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) with Xenon beams

In 2017 the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring demonstrated once more the feasibility of injecting, accumulating, cooling and accelerating a new nuclei, $^{129}$Xe${39+}$. The operation of this new ion species started at the beginning of March with the start up of the xenon ion source and the Linac3. [...]

Amorphous Carbon Coating in SPS

Within the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project, the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) needs to be upgraded to inject into the LHC higher intensity and brighter 25-ns bunch spaced beams. To mitigate the Electron Multipacting (E.M.) phenomenon, a well-known limiting factor for high-intensity positively charged beams, CERN developed carbon coatings with a low Secondary Electron Yield (SEY). [...]

Amorphous Carbon Thin Film Coating of the SPS Beamline: Evaluation of the First Coating Implementation

As part of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project, the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) must be upgraded in order to inject in the LHC 25 ns bunch spaced beams of higher intensity. To mitigate the Electron Multipacting (EM) phenomenon in the SPS, CERN developed thin film carbon coatings with a low Secondary Electron Yield (SEY). [...]

LHC Injectors Upgrade Project: Outlook of the Modifications to the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) Vacuum System and Impact on the Operation of the Carbon-Coated Vacuum Chambers

Aiming at doubling the beam intensity and reducing the beam emittance [1], significant modifications of the LHC injector chain will take place during Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), starting from 2019. The LIU project (LHC Injector Upgrade) [2], in the specific, touches Linac4, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB), the Proton Synchrotron (PS), the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). [...]

Removing Known SPS Intensity Limitations for High Luminosity LHC Goals

In preparation of the SPS as an LHC injector its impedance was significantly reduced in 1999 - 2000. A new SPS impedance reduction campaign is planned now for the High Luminosity (HL)-LHC project, which requires bunch intensities twice as high as the nominal one. [...]

Design of a Magnetic Bump Tail Scraping System for the CERN SPS

The LHC injectors are being upgraded to meet the demanding beam specification required for High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) operation. In order to reduce the beam losses which can trigger the sensitive LHC beam loss interlocks during the SPS-to-LHC beam injection process, it is important that the beam tails are properly scraped away in the SPS.
