VUV/Soft X-Ray FEL Projects on the Horizon / Bakker, Rene J
Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) combine the properties of lasers and synchrotron radiation: the possibility to produce high-power, short-pulsed, laser-like radiation in spectral regions not accessible by other light-sources. Operation of an FEL in the Vacuum Ultra Violet (VUV) to X-ray spectral region has proven challenging, however, mainly because of the increased demands set to the accelerator technology as the wavelength becomes shorter (higher peak currents and beam energy, combined with a high stability and a lower emittance and/or energy spread). Next Generation Synchronization System for the VUV-FEL at DESY / Schlarb, H ; Ayvazyan, V T ; Ludwig, F ; Nölle, D ; Schmidt, B ; Simrock, S
The control and stabilization of the longitudinal beam profile and the bunch arrival time in linac driven VUV or X-ray Free-Electron Lasers require special effort and new developments in the fields of low level RF controls, global synchronization systems and longitudinal beam feedbacks. In this paper we describe the required upgrades for the VUV-FEL at DESY to synchronize the FEL pulse and optical lasers to the level of hundred femtoseconds (FWHM)..

Isochronous Bend for a High Gain Ring FEL / Nikolaevich, A M ; Alexandrovich, O S ; Aleksandrovich, V N
The recently proposed ring free electron laser (FEL) consists of several undulators with isochronous bends between them. Isochronous bends are necessary to preserve the beam bunching between undulators. [...]

Extended Parametric Evaluation for 1 FEL : Emittance and Current Requirements / Pedrozzi, M ; Ingold, G
In the synchrotron radiation community there is a strong request for high brightness, coherent X-ray light pulses, especially in the 1 to 0.1 nm wave length range. A Free Electron Laser (FEL), driven by a linear single pass accelerator, is today the most promising mechanism able to produce such radiation. [...]
