QCD thermalization: Ab initio approaches and interdisciplinary connections / Berges, Jürgen (U. Heidelberg, ITP) ; Heller, Michal P. (Potsdam, Max Planck Inst.) ; Mazeliauskas, Aleksas (CERN) ; Venugopalan, Raju (Brookhaven)
Heavy-ion collisions at BNL's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and CERN's Large Hadron Collider provide strong evidence for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma, with temperatures extracted from relativistic viscous hydrodynamic simulations shown to be well above the transition temperature from hadron matter. How the strongly correlated quark-gluon matter forms in a heavy-ion collision, its properties off-equilibrium, and the thermalization process in the plasma, are outstanding problems in QCD. [...]

Thermalization of QCD plasmas / Schlichting, Soeren (speaker) (Universität Bielefeld)
Over the past decades experiments at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have discovered the formation of a de-confined Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) , and established a standard picture of the space-time evolution of the QGP based on relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. While high-energy heavy-Ion collisions thus provide a unique laboratory to study QCD matter under extreme conditions, it has proven challenging to understand how the far-from equilibrium matter created in the collision turns into a nearly equilibrated plasma of quarks and gluons. Hydrodynamic attractors, initial state energy and particle production in relativistic nuclear collisions / Giacalone, Giuliano (IPhT, Saclay) ; Mazeliauskas, Aleksas (Heidelberg U. ; CERN) ; Schlichting, Sören (Bielefeld U.)
We exploit the concept of hydrodynamic attractors to establish a general relation between the initial state energy and the produced particle multiplicities in high-energy nuclear collisions. When combined with an ab initio model of energy deposition, the entropy production during the pre-equilibrium phase naturally explains the universal centrality dependence of the measured charged particle yields in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Emergence of prescaling in far-from-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma / Scheihing Hitschfeld, Bruno Sebastian (speaker) (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
Recently, in the context of the effective kinetic theory developed by Arnold, Moore and Yaffe [1], Berges and Mazeliauskas [2] have shown that the quark-gluon plasma after a sufficiently energetic heavy-ion collision exhibits prescaling, i.e., that the distribution function can be characterized by a scaling distribution plus three dynamical exponents that converge to the universal scaling exponents of the far-from-equilibrium scaling solution. However, the mechanism through which prescaling is realized has remained unclear thus far. In this work we study an analytic description of the kinetic theory in terms of a Fokker-Planck collision integral, akin to the small-angle approximation of the full collision kernel, and show that prescaling emerges naturally when the solution approaches the scaling attractor [...]
