Influence of variable tungsten valency on optical transmittance and radiation hardness of lead tungstate (PWO) scintillation crystals / Burachas, S ; Beloglovski, S Y ; Makov, I ; Saveliev, Yu ; Ippolitov, M S (Russian Research Center / Kurchatov Institute) ; Man'ko, V ; Nikulin, S P ; Nyanin, A ; Vasilev, A ; Apanasenko, A et al.
A new approach to interpret the radiation hardness of PbWO//4 (PWO) scintillators is developed by revealing importance of the inclusions of tungsten oxides WO//3//-//x with variable valency. It is demonstrated that the influence of the ionizing radiation on PWO is, in many aspects, similar to the effect of the high-temperature annealing in oxygenless ambient. [...]

Recent progress in the development of lead tungstate crystals / Baccaro, S
The investigation performed up to now on single crystals of PbWO/sub 4/ (PWO) provides the evidence of the possibility to optimise the optical properties of an intrinsic scintillator such as PWO: the control of essential requirements in the crystal preparation (raw material purity, growing methods and post-growth annealing) as well as the introduction of selected dopants at suitable concentrations (particularly trivalent and pentavalent ions) were found to be very successful in lowering the concentration of point defects in the lattice which strongly affect scintillation properties and radiation hardness. The optical transmission as well as light yield before and after irradiation was measured. [...]

Status of the PWO crystal preproduction from Russia for CMS-ECAL / Auffray, Etiennette (CERN)
Since September 1998, the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter has entered into its construction phase. Since that time, 3500 PbWO/sub 4/ (PWO) crystals of excellent quality have been produced by Bogoroditsk Techno-Chemical Plant (BTCP) in Russia and analysed at the CERN regional centre. [...]

Application of PWO crystals for detection of low-activity gamma- radiation in the energy range above 3 MeV / Drobychev, G Yu (Belarus State U.) ; Baryshevsky, V G (Belarus State U.) ; Fedorov, A A (Belarus State U.) ; Khruschinsky, A A (Belarus State U.) ; Korjik, M V (Belarus State U.) ; Lecoq, P (CERN) ; Missevitch, O V (Belarus State U.)
Lead tungstate PbWO4 (PWO) scintillator was developed during the R&D; project initiated in a frame of preparation of experiments in high- energy physics to be carried out at new generation of colliders like LHC (CERN, Geneva, Switzerland). Compared to other promising fast and dense scintillators, PWO is an optimal compromise to make a very compact detector with good performance and the best price/performance ratio. [...]

Certifying procedures and fully automated equipment for testing of Pb WO/sub 4/ (PWO) scintillators have been developed. The parameters to be verified are the optical transmission spectra in the longitudinal and transversal $9 directions; the light yield and its non-uniformity along the crystal; the scintillation kinetics; the radiation hardness and the dimensions. A beam study of electromagnetic-shower calorimeter based on $PbWO_{4}$ heavy scintillation crystal / Hidaka, N ; Takamatsu, K ; Tsuru, T ; Inaba, S ; Fujii, Y ; Yasu, Y
In order to measure the energies and positions of high energy gamma - rays, we mostly use an electromagnetic-shower calorimeter. Recently, PbWO/sub 4/ (PWO) crystal has attracted attention as an excellent scintillation radiator for the EM-calorimeter because of its short radiation-length, fast decay-time of scintillation and high radiation resistivity.
