Assessment of the real part of the impedance of the LHC collimators with instability growth rate measurements / Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN ; Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN)
The impedance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a source of instabilities and has to be monitored closely. It is usually assessed by measuring the tune-shift vs intensity, in particular at top energy where it is the most critical, as the collimators are the closest to the beam. [...]

Recent Developments with the New Tools for Collimation Simulations in Xsuite / Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Broggi, Giacomo (CERN ; Rome U., La Sapienza, Dip. di Astron.) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Demetriadou, Despina (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hugo, Gabrielle (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Lindström, Bjorn (CERN) et al.
Simulations of single-particle tracking involving collimation systems need dedicated tools to perform the different tasks needed. These include the accurate description of particle-matter interactions when a tracked particle impacts a collimator jaw; a detailed aperture model to identify the longitudinal location of losses; and others. High intensity beam dynamics assessment and challenges for HL-LHC / Rumolo, G (CERN) ; Salvant, B (CERN) ; Mounet, N (CERN) ; Tomás, R (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; Baudrenghien, P (CERN) ; Bruce, R (CERN) ; Buffat, X (CERN) ; Calaga, R (CERN) ; De Maria, R (CERN) et al.
The High Luminosity (HL-LHC) project aims to increase the integrated luminosity of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by an order of magnitude compared to its initial design. This requires a large increase in bunch intensity and beam brightness compared to the first LHC runs, and hence poses serious collective-effects challenges, related in particular to electron cloud, instabilities from beam-coupling impedance, and beam-beam effects. [...]

Mitigating Collimation Impedance and Improving Halo Cleaning with New Optics and Settings Strategy of the HL-LHC Betatron Collimation System / Lindström, Bjorn (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN) ; De Maria, Riccardo (CERN) ; Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN) ; Persson, Tobias (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) et al.
With High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) beam intensities, there are concerns that the beam losses in the dispersion suppressors around the betatron cleaning insertion might exceed the quench limits. Furthermore, to maximize the beam lifetime it is important to reduce the impedance as much as possible. [...]

Simulations and Measurements of Betatron and Off-momentum Cleaning Performance in the Energy Ramp at the LHC / Triantafyllou, Natalia (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Dewhurst, Kay (CERN) ; Lindström, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is equipped with a multistage collimation system that protects the machine against unavoidable beam losses at large betatron and energy offsets at all stages of operation. Dedicated validations and an understanding in simulations of the collimation performance are crucial for the energy ramp from 450 GeV to 6.8 TeV because complex changes of optics and orbit take place in this phase. Collimation of 400 MJ Beams at the LHC: The First Step Towards the HL-LHC Era / Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Baillard, Dylan (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to meet the challenges of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. A first stage of the HL-LHC upgrade was already deployed during the last LHC Long Shutdown, offering important improvements of the collimation cleaning, a significant reduction of the impedance contribution and better cleaning of collisional debris, in particular for ion-ion collisions. Characterization of bent crystals for beam collimation with 6.8 TeV proton beams at the LHC / D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Ferrara) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; EPFL-ISIC, Lausanne) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Demassieux, Quentin (CERN) ; Dewhurst, Kay Alana (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
The concept of crystal collimation exploits the peculiar properties of crystalline materials to deflect high-energy beam particles at angles orders of magnitude larger than what can be achieved with scattering by conventional materials used as primary collimators. This innovative technique is planned to be used to improve the collimation efficiency with heavy-ion beams at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). [...]

During the third operational run of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, starting in 2022, the beam energy was increased to 6.8 TeV and the bunch population is planned to be pushed to unprecedented levels. Already in the first year of operation, beam stored energies up to 400 MJ were achieved. [...]
