1. Luminosity measurement at LHCb
Reference: Poster-2024-1221

Creator(s): Van Dijk, Maarten

The LHCb detector, designed to measure the decays of heavy hadrons, is a forward-arm spectrometer. Its efficiency can be degraded by collisions with high occupancy: therefore, a technique known as "luminosity levelling" has been used since the start of the LHC Run 1, allowing to control and stabilize the instantaneous luminosity with a precision of 5%. During LHC Runs 1 and 2, this technique employed data from the hardware-based trigger level to determine the instantaneous luminosity. These counters are calibrated in dedicated data taking runs a few times per year. The combination of van der Meer scans and of beam profiles obtained in beam-gas interactions, unique to LHCb, allowed LHCb to obtain in Run 1 the most precise luminosity measurement ever achieved at a bunched hadron collider. During LHC Run 3, the upgraded LHCb detector will see a 5x increase of luminosity. Dedicated luminosity detectors have been designed and are being commissioned for use in Run 3 and Run 4. This talk will review the methods used in Run 1 and introduce the new approach being developed for the coming LHC runs.

The East Area at the Proton Synchrotron has undergone extensive renovations, marking a significant milestone in its more than 55-year history as one of CERN’s enduring facilities for experiments, beam tests, and irradiation. This facility, which serves over 20 user teams for about 200 days annually, now boasts an enhanced infrastructure to cater to future beam test and physics requirements. [...]

Background mitigation concepts for SUPER-NaNu / Stummer, Florian Wolfgang (University of London (GB)) ; Andersen, Emily Marie (University of Bergen (NO)) ; Banerjee, Dipanwita (CERN) ; Baratto Roldan, Anna (CERN) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Boogert, Stewart Takashi (University of Manchester (GB)) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Dyks, Luke Aidan (University of Oxford (GB)) ; Gatignon, Lau (Lancaster University (GB)) et al.
Super-NaNu is a proposed neutrino experiment as part of the SHADOWS proposal for the high intensity facility ECN3 in CERN’s North Area. It aims to detect neutrino interactions downstream of a beam-dump that is exposed to a 400 GeV/c high intensity proton beam from the SPS. [...]

Beam loss studies for the P42 beamline at the CERN SPS North Area / Dyks, Luke Aidan (University of Oxford (GB)) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Banerjee, Dipanwita (CERN) ; Baratto Roldan, Anna (CERN) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Gatignon, Lau (Lancaster University (GB)) ; Goillot, Alice Marie (CERN) et al.
The P42 beamline transports 400 GeV protons from the CERN SPS between the T4 and T10 targets. A secondary particle beam is produced at the T10 target and transported along the K12 beamline to the experimental cavern ECN3, presently housing the NA62 experiment. [...]

Characterisation of the optics of the TT24 and P42 beamlines in the CERN SPS North Area / Dyks, Luke Aidan (University of Oxford (GB)) ; Banerjee, Dipanwita (CERN) ; Baratto Roldan, Anna (CERN) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Gatignon, Lau (Lancaster University (GB)) ; Goillot, Alice Marie (CERN) ; Gorn, Aleksandr (CERN) et al.
400 GeV protons extracted from the CERN SPS are transported to the T4 target via the TT20 transfer line. The P42 beamline then transports the protons that did not interact in the T4 target to the T10 target. [...]

Search for prompt production of pentaquarks in charm hadron final states / LHCb Collaboration
A search for hidden-charm pentaquark states decaying to a range of $\Sigma_{c}\bar{D}$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{D}$ final states, as well as doubly-charmed pentaquark states to $\Sigma_{c}D$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}D$, is made using samples of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.7fb^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb detector at $\sqrt{s} = 13 Te\kern -0.1em V$. Since no significant signals are found, upper limits are set on the pentaquark yields relative to that of the $\Lambda_{c}^+$ baryon in the $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to pK^{-}\pi^{+}$ decay mode. [...]

Observation and branching fraction measurement of the decay $\Xi_b^- \to \Lambda_b^0 \pi^-$ / LHCb Collaboration
The decay $\Xi_b^-\to\Lambda_b^0\pi^-$ is observed using a proton-proton collision data sample collected at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb$^{-1}$. This process is mediated by the $s\to u\bar{u}d$ quark-level transition, where the $b$ quark in the $\Xi_b^-$ baryon is a spectator in the decay. [...]

Measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV / LHCb Collaboration
The first measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 5.02\,$TeV in the forward region is reported, using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in year 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $100 \pm 2\,\rm{pb^{-1}}$. The production cross-section is measured for final-state muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<\eta<4.5$ with transverse momentum $p_{\rm{T}}> 20\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c}$. [...]

Measurement of the CKM angle $\gamma$ using the $B^{\pm}\rightarrow D^*h^{\pm}$ channels / LHCb Collaboration
A measurement of the $CP$-violating observables from $B^{\pm}\rightarrow D^* K^{\pm}$ and $\mbox{$B^{\pm}\rightarrow D^* \pi^{\pm}$}$ decays is presented, where $D^* (D) $ is an admixture of $D^{*0}$ and $\bar{D}^{*0}$ ($D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$) states and is reconstructed through the decay chains $ D^* \rightarrow D\pi^0/\gamma$ and $\mbox{$D \to K_S^0 \pi^+\pi^-/K_S^0 K^+K^-$}$. The measurement is performed by analysing the signal yield variation across the $D$ decay phase space and is independent of any amplitude model. [...]
