A system solution for a 100 kA class high temperature superconducting line for HL-LHC and for wider energy applications / Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Bailey, Wendell (U. Southampton (main)) ; Barth, Christian (CERN) ; Cruikshank, Paul (CERN) ; Gahier, Vanessa (CERN) ; Leclercq, Yann (CERN) ; Pasdeloup, Florian (CERN) ; Willering, Gerard (CERN) ; Yang, Yifeng (U. Southampton (main))
The powering of the High Luminosity magnets of the Large Hadron Collider relies on Cold Powering Systems incorporating direct current superconducting lines, called Superconducting Links, based on magnesium diboride cables. A Cold Powering System interconnects the magnets in the accelerator existing tunnel to the power converters in newly excavated galleries that are about 8 m higher than the accelerator tunnel and up to about 100 m distant from the magnets. Status and Challenges in the MQXFB Nb3Sn Quadrupoles for the HL-LHC / LARP Collaboration
The inner triplet (or low-$\beta$) quadrupole magnets are among the components to be upgraded in LHC interaction regions for the HL-LHC project. The new quadrupole magnets, called MQXF, are based on Nb3Sn superconducting magnet technology, with a conductor peak field of 11.3 T. [...]

Result of Powering and Field Measurements on the GaToroid Demonstrator / Bottura, L (CERN) ; Breschi, M (CERN) ; Haziot, A (Bologna U.) ; Lehtinen, T (CERN) ; Liebsch, M (CERN) ; Mangiarotti, F J (CERN) ; Pentella, M (CERN) ; Perez, J C (CERN) ; Petrone, C (CERN) ; Sedlak, K (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) et al.
GaToroid is a novel idea of a steady-state, toroidal magnet that directs multiple charged particle beams for hadron or electron therapy without rotating parts or magnet ramping. GaToroid has the potential of conformal radiotherapy with a configuration that can be simpler and lighter than conventional rotating gantries, also offering FLASH capability well beyond what is presently possible. Manufacturing and Testing of the First Nb3Sn Subscale Stress-Managed Common-Coils: 2-in-1 Dipole Magnet Developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute / Araujo, D (PSI, Villigen) ; Auchmann, B (PSI, Villigen ; CERN) ; Brem, A (PSI, Villigen) ; Michlmayr, T (PSI, Villigen) ; Müller, C (PSI, Villigen) ; Stampfli, A (CERN) ; Bonasia, A (CERN) ; Boutboul, T (CERN) ; Fleiter, J (CERN) ; Haziot, A (CERN) et al.
The magnet development (MagDev) laboratory at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) has designed the subscale stress-managed common-coils (subSMCC1) 2-in-1 dipole magnet as part of the CHART (Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology) contribution to the CERN HFM (High-Field Magnet) programme. This R&D; vehicle is part of the CHART/MagDev high-field roadmap. [...]

Measurement and Modeling of Initial Quench Development in Nb3Sn Accelerator Magnets / Keijzer, Ruben (Twente U., Enschede) ; Willering, Gerard (CERN) ; Rogacki, Piotr (CERN) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Russenschuck, Stephan (CERN) ; Dhallé, Marc (Twente U., Enschede) ; Kate, Herman Ten (Twente U., Enschede)
Accelerator magnets are equipped with voltage taps and, on the test bench, with so-called quench antenna's to monitor the transient effects occurring during a magnet quench. Proper identification and localization of a quench origin is vital for understanding performance issues in Nb3Sn accelerator magnets. [...]

Complex Impedance of the LHC Main Dipole Magnet in the Presence of Artificial Short Circuits / Janitschke, M (CERN ; U. Rostock) ; Ravaioli, E (CERN) ; Verweij, A P (CERN) ; Willering, G (CERN) ; van Rienen, U (U. Rostock)
Interturn short circuits inside the coil-winding pack of superconducting magnets can lead to severe damage to the magnet during a quench or fast current ramps. Investigating their impact and finding ways to detect these nonconformities could save considerable run-time of an accelerator. [...]

Beam separation dipole magnets (D1 magnet, MBXF) will be installed on both sides of two interaction points (ATLAS and CMS) for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider upgrade (HL-LHC). High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) is responsible for delivering one full-scale prototype and six series production cold masses to the HL-LHC project. [...]
