Measurement of the collision rate coefficients between atmospheric ions and multiply charged aerosol particles in the CERN CLOUD chamber / Pfeifer, Joschka (CERN ; Frankfurt U.) ; Mahfouz, Naser G A (Carnegie Mellon U. ; Princeton U.) ; Schulze, Benjamin C (Caltech) ; Mathot, Serge (CERN) ; Stolzenburg, Dominik (Helsinki U.) ; Baalbaki, Rima (Helsinki U.) ; Brasseur, Zoé (Helsinki U.) ; Caudillo, Lucia (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Dada, Lubna (PSI, Villigen) ; Granzin, Manuel (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) et al.
Aerosol particles have an important role in Earth's radiation balance and climate, both directly and indirectly through aerosol–cloud interactions. Most aerosol particles in the atmosphere are weakly charged, affecting both their collision rates with ions and neutral molecules, as well as the rates by which they are scavenged by other aerosol particles and cloud droplets. RF Measurements and Tuning of the CERN 750 MHz ELISA-RFQ for Public Exhibition / Marchi, Mariangela (CERN ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Grudiev, Alexej (CERN) ; Mathot, Serge (CERN) ; Pommerenke, Hermann (CERN)
Over the last few years, CERN has successfully designed, built, and commissioned the smallest RFQ to date, the one meter long PIXE-RFQ operating at 750 MHz. Its compactness offers a unique opportunity for education and public presentation of the accelerator community: A duplicate ma- chine called ELISA-RFQ (Experimental Linac for Surface Analysis) will be exhibited in the Science Gateway, CERN’s upcoming scientific education and outreach center. Synergistic HNO$_{3}$–H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$–NH$_{3}$ upper tropospheric particle formation / Wang, Mingyi ; Xiao, Mao ; Bertozzi, Barbara ; Marie, Guillaume ; Rörup, Birte ; Schulze, Benjamin ; Bardakov, Roman ; He, Xu-Cheng ; Shen, Jiali ; Scholz, Wiebke et al.
New particle formation in the upper free troposphere is a major global source of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). However, the precursor vapours that drive the process are not well understood. [...]

New particle formation (NPF) is a significant source of atmospheric particles, affecting climate and air quality. Understanding the mechanisms involved in urban aerosols is important to develop effective mitigation strategies. [...]

Molecular understanding of the suppression of new-particle formation by isoprene / Heinritzi, Martin (Frankfurt U.) ; Dada, Lubna (Helsinki U.) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U.) ; Stolzenburg, Dominik (Vienna U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Frankfurt U. ; U. Nucleation of atmospheric vapours produces more than half of global cloud condensation nuclei and so has an important influence on climate. Recent studies show that monoterpene (C$_{10}$H$_{16}$) oxidation yields highly oxygenated products that can nucleate with or without sulfuric acid. [...]

Role of iodine oxoacids in atmospheric aerosol nucleation / He, Xu-Cheng (Helsinki U.) ; Tham, Yee Jun (Helsinki U.) ; Dada, Lubna (Helsinki U.) ; Wang, Mingyi (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Finkenzeller, Henning (U. Iodic acid (HIO3) is known to form aerosol particles in coastal marine regions, but predicted nucleation and growth rates are lacking. Using the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber, we find that the nucleation rates of HIO3 particles are rapid, even exceeding sulfuric acid–ammonia rates under similar conditions. The Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets (CLOUD) experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is investigating the nucleation and growth of aerosol particles under atmospheric conditions and their activation into cloud droplets. The experiment comprises an ultraclean 26 m3chamber and its associated systems (the CLOUD facility) together with a suite of around 50 advanced instruments attached to the chamber via sampling probes to analyze its contents. Rapid growth of organic aerosol nanoparticles over a wide tropospheric temperature range / Stolzenburg, Dominik (Vienna U.) ; Fischer, Lukas (Innsbruck U.) ; Vogel, Alexander L (Frankfurt U. ; CERN ; PSI, Villigen) ; Heinritzi, Martin (Frankfurt U.) ; Schervish, Meredith (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Frankfurt U.) ; Dada, Lubna (Helsinki U.) ; Ahonen, Lauri R (Helsinki U.) ; Amorim, Antonio (Lisbon U. ; CMAF, Lisbon) et al.
Nucleation and growth of aerosol particles from atmospheric vapors constitutes a major source of global cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). The fraction of newly formed particles that reaches CCN sizes is highly sensitive to particle growth rates, especially for particle sizes <10 nm, where coagulation losses to larger aerosol particles are greatest.
