Radiation Simulations and Development of Concepts for High Power Beam Dumps, Catchers and Pre-separator Area Layouts for the Fragment Separators for RIA / Ronningen, Reginald ; Ahle, Larry ; Beene, James R ; Blideanu, Valetin ; Boles, Jason ; Bollen, Georg ; Burgess, Thomas ; Carter, Ken ; Conner, David L ; Gabriel, Tony A et al.
The development of high-power beam dumps and catchers, and pre-separator layouts for proposed fragment separators of the Rare-Isotope Accelerator (RIA) facility are important in realizing how to handle the 400 kW in the primary beam. We will present examples of pre-conceptual designs of beam dumps, fragment catchers, and the pre-separator layout. [...]

Radiation Simulations for the Proposed ISOL Stations for RIA / Ronningen, Reginald ; Ahle, Larry ; Beene, James R ; Blideanu, Valetin ; Boles, Jason ; Bollen, Georg ; Bredeweg, Todd ; Bricault, Pierre ; Burgess, Thomas ; Carter, Ken et al.
The Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Physics, within the Office of Science (SC), has given high priority to consider and analyze design concepts for the target areas for the production of rare isotopes via the ISOL technique at the Rare-Isotope Accelerator (RIA) Facility. Key criteria are the maximum primary beam power of 400 kW, minimizing target change-out time, good radiological protection, flexibility with respect to implementing new target concepts, and the analysis and minimization of hazards associated with the operation of the facility. [...]

Radioactive Ion Beam Development at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility / Stracener, Dan ; Alton, Gerald ; Beene, James R ; Bilheux, Hassina Z ; Bilheux, Jean-Christophe ; Blackmon, Jeff C ; Carter, Ken ; Dowling, Darryl ; Juras, Raymond ; Kawai, Yoko et al.
Radioactive beams are produced at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory using the Isotope Separator On-Line (ISOL) technique. Radioactive nuclei are produced in a thick target via irradiation with energetic light ions (protons, deuterons, helium isotopes) and then post-accelerated to a few MeV/nucleon for use in nuclear physics experiments. Decay of /sup 199m, g/Po : isomeric transitions in /sup 199/PO and /sup 199/BI / Bingham, C R ; Carter, H K ; Lide, R W ; Mlekodaj, R L ; Riedinger, L L ; Spejewski, E H ; Stone, R E
The M4 isomeric transition (E/sub gamma /-238 keV) of the 13/2/sup +/ state in /sup 199/PO to the 5/2/sup -/ level, with a half life of a 4.17 min, has been observed in mass separated sources. An approximately 72 keV transition in coincidence with the isomeric transition suggests the placement the 5/2/sup -/ level above the 3/2 /sup -/, and when combined with alpha -decay Q values, this results in a placement of the 13/2/sup +/ isomeric state in /sup 195/Pb at approximately 200 keV. The alpha -decay rates of /sup 186,188,190,192/Pb have been reported to have an anomalous dependence on neutron number. Theoretical calculations do not reproduce this unusual behavior. [...]

The energy levels in /sup 74,76/Kr have been studied with a range of in-beam, gamma -spectroscopy techniques following heavy-ion reactions and in /sup 76/Kr via the radioactive decay of /sup 76/Rb. Breaks in the level energies and moments of inertia in /sup 74,76/Kr are observed at low spins. [...]
