Investigation on different materials after pulsed high field conditioning and low-energy H- irradiation / Serafim, Catarina (CERN ; Helsinki U.) ; Peacock, R. (CERN) ; Calatroni, S. (CERN) ; Djurabekova, F. (Helsinki U.) ; Perez Fontenla, A.T. (CERN) ; Wuensch, W. (CERN) ; Sgobba, S. (CERN) ; Grudiev, A. (CERN) ; Lombardi, A. (CERN) ; Sargsyan, E. (CERN) et al.
During operation, the radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) of the LINAC4 at CERN is exposed to high electric fields, which can lead to vacuum breakdown. It is also subject to beam loss, which can cause surface modification, including blistering, which can result in reduced electric field holding and an increased breakdown rate. [...]

Experimental Investigation of Vacuum Breakdown Triggering Mechanisms in a DC Electrode System / Peacock, Ruth
This thesis describes the testing and results of the two pulsed DC large electrode systems at CERN, as part of a collaborations with the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) and Linear Accelerator 4 (Linac 4) projects [...]

Pulsed DC High Field Measurements of Irradiated and Non-Irradiated Electrodes of Different Materials / Peacock, Ruth (Lancaster U. (main) ; CERN) ; Bellodi, Giulia (CERN) ; Burt, Graeme (Lancaster U. Beam loss occurs in Radio Frequency Quadrupoles (RFQ), and has been observed in the H⁻ linear accelerator Linac4 (L4) at CERN. To determine if beam loss can induce breakdowns, and to compare the robustness of different materials, tests have been done using pulsed high-voltage DC systems. [...]

Measurements of Field Emission Induced Optical Spectra / Peacock, Ruth C (CERN ; Lancaster U.) ; Burt, Graeme (Lancaster U.) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Wuensch, Walter (CERN)
Field emission induced optical spectra in a dc electrode system have been measured using a spectrometer and CCD camera system in order to gain insight into the nature of field emissions sites. Spectra were measured from between 2 ridged parallel copper electrodes with a gap ranging from 60µm to 100µm and a bias voltage of up to 8000V under high vacuum conditions. [...]

Identifying critical plastic activity in electrodes under intense electric fields and the link to breakdown nucleation / Ashkenazy, Yinon (Hebrew U.) ; Popov, Inna (Hebrew U.) ; Yashar, Ayelet (Hebrew U.) ; Gad, Raanan (Hebrew U.) ; Profatilova, Iaroslava (CERN) ; Paszkiewicz, Jan (CERN) ; Peacock, Ruth (CERN) ; Wuensch, Walter (CERN)
The hypothesis that arc nucleation is related to plastic activity due to collective motion of dislocation in the cathode is examined via experiments and theoretical efforts over the last few years. Current theoretical and experimental observations indicating specific dislocation activity related to the applied high field are reviewed. [...]

High-gradient behavior of a dipole-mode rf structure / Woolley, B (Lancaster U. ; CERN) ; Burt, G (Lancaster U.) ; Dexter, A C (Lancaster U.) ; Peacock, R (Lancaster U.) ; Millar, W L (Lancaster U.) ; Catalan Lasheras, N (CERN) ; Degiovanni, A (CERN) ; Grudiev, A (CERN) ; Mcmonagle, G (CERN) ; Syratchev, I (CERN) et al.
A normal-conducting, X-band traveling wave structure operating in the dipole mode has been systematically high-gradient tested to gain insight into the maximum possible gradients in these types of structure. Measured structure conditioning, breakdown behavior, and achieved surface fields are reported as well as a postmortem analysis of the breakdown position and a scanning electron microscope analysis of the high-field surfaces. Breakdown of metals subject to intense electric fields is a long-standing limiting factor in high-voltage applications. The mechanism leading to breakdown nucleation is not completely understood. [...]
