This contribution presents a novel single-moderator neutron spectrometer, named “TetraBall”, developed at INFN and optimized for characterizing the neutron field in the CMS experimental cavern. The TetraBall condenses the functionality of several Bonner Spheres (BS) in a single moderator and it is equipped with 42 SiC radiation-hard detectors organized in a tetrahedral geometry designed to be insensitive to incident gammas and charged particles. On the wake of the results obtained so far at the SPARC\_LAB test-facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (Italy), we are currently investigating the possibility to design and build a new multi-disciplinary user-facility, equipped with a soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a $\sim$1 GeV high brightness linac based on plasma accelerator modules. We report on the characterisation measurements of the energ y spectra from a Be (p,xn) neutron source to be installed at the IGISOL-JYFLTRA P facility for studies of neutron-induced independent fission yields. The measurements were performed at The Svedberg Laboratory (Uppsala, Sweden), during 50 hours of beam-time in June, 2012. [...]
