Investigations on NbTi superconducting racetrack coils under pulsed-current excitations

One of the key issues in the technology of superconductors is the protection against quenches. When designing a superconductor as a magnet, a coil or even current leads, the design should be made such that the superconductor withstands all operational conditions as fast discharges, pulsed loads or even rapid transient background fields.Computational modeling of pulsed-current characterization in a self-field NbTi racetrack sample coil has been performed using the finite element modelling software Opera as a step towards understanding the thermal and electromagnetic processes during a quench. EuPRAXIA – a compact, cost-efficient particle and radiation source
/ Weikum, M K (DESY) ; Akhter, T (INFN, Naples) ; Alesini, P D (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Alexandrova, A S (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Anania, M P (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Andreev, N E (Lebedev Inst. ; Moscow, MIPT) ; Andriyash, I (SOLEIL, Saint-Aubin) ; Aschikhin, A (DESY) ; Assmann, R W (DESY) ; Audet, T (LPGP, Orsay) et al.
Plasma accelerators present one of the most suitable candidates for the development of more compact particle
acceleration technologies, yet they still lag behind radiofrequency (RF)-based devices when it comes to beam quality,
control, stability and power efficiency. The Horizon 2020-funded project EuPRAXIA (“European Plasma Research
Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications”) aims to overcome the first three of these hurdles by developing a
conceptual design for a first international user facility based on plasma acceleration. [...]

Feedback design for control of the micro-bunching instability based on reinforcement learning
/ Boltz, T (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Brosi, M (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Bründermann, E (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Haerer, B (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Kaiser, P (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Pohl, C (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Schreiber, P (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Yan, M (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Asfour, T (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Müller, A -S (KIT, Karlsruhe)
The operation of ring-based synchrotron light sources with short electron bunches increases the emission of coherent synchrotron radiation in the THz frequency range. However, the micro-bunching instability resulting from self-interaction of the bunch with its own radiation field limits stable operation with constant intensity of CSR emission to a particular threshold current. Systematic studies of the microbunching and weak instability at short bunch lengths
/ Brosi, M (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Blomley, E (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Boltz, T (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Bründermann, E (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Caselle, M (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Gethmann, J (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Kehrer, B (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Papash, A.I. (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Rota, L (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Schönfeldt, P (KIT, Karlsruhe) et al.
At KARA, the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology synchrotron, the so-called short-bunch operation mode allows the reduction of the bunch length down to a few picoseconds. The microbunching instability resulting from the high degree of longitudinal compression leads to fluctuations in the emitted terahertz radiation. [...]

KARA, the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator, can be operated in different modes, including a short-bunch mode. During this mode, where the dispersion is stretched in order to reduce the momentum-compaction factor, micro-bunching instability can occur. [...]
