Only a tiny fraction of the produced collisions can be stored on tape and immense real-time data reduction is needed. An effective trigger system must maintain high trigger efficiencies for the physics we are most interested in, and at the same time suppress the enormous QCD backgrounds. This requires massive computing power to minimize the online execution time of complex algorithms. A multi-level trigger is an effective solution for an otherwise impossible problem. The Fast Tracker (FTK) is a proposed upgrade to the current ATLAS trigger system that will operate at full Level-1 output rates and provide high quality tracks reconstructed over the entire detector by the start of processing in Level-2. FTK solves the combinatorial challenge inherent to tracking by exploiting massive parallelism of associative memories that can compare inner detector hits to millions of pre-calculated patterns simultaneously. The tracking problem within matched patterns is further simplified by using pre-computed linearized fitting constants and leveraging fast DSPs in modern commercial FPGAs. Overall, FTK is able to compute the helix parameters for all tracks in an event and apply quality cuts in less than 100 s. The system design is defined and studied with respec t to high transverse momentum (high-PT) Level-2 objects: b-jets, tau-jets, and isolated leptons. We test FTK algorithms using ATLAS full simulation with WH events up to 31034 cm−2 s−1 luminosity and comparing FTK results with the offline tracking capability. We present the architecture and the reconstruction performances for the mentioned high-PT Level-2 objects. 001274855 540__ $$3Preprint$$aCC-BY-4.0 001274855 594__ $$aPROC 001274855 595__ $$aCERN CDS-Invenio WebSubmit 001274855 65017 $$2SzGeCERN$$aDetectors and Experimental Techniques 001274855 65027 $$2SzGeCERN$$aDAQ and Trigger 001274855 6531_ $$9CERN$$aTracking 001274855 6531_ $$9CERN$$aTrigger 001274855 6531_ $$9CERN$$aPattern Marching 001274855 6531_ $$9CERN$$aVLSI 001274855 6531_ $$9CERN$$ab-tagging 001274855 6531_ $$9CERN$$atau-tagging 001274855 690C_ $$aCERN 001274855 690C_ $$aINTNOTE 001274855 690C_ $$aPUBLATLAS 001274855 690C_ $$aINTNOTEATLASPUBL 001274855 693__ $$aCERN LHC$$eATLAS 001274855 700__ $$aAndreani, A$$uMilan U.$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$aZhang, J$$uArgonne 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2070401$$9#BEARD#$$aBoveia, A$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$aBevacqua, V$$uPisa U.$$uINFN, Pisa 001274855 700__ $$aCheng, Y$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$aCanelli, F$$uChicago U.$$uFermilab 001274855 700__ $$aBogdan, M$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2081497$$9#BEARD#$$aDell'Orso, M$$uPisa U.$$uINFN, Pisa 001274855 700__ $$aBossini, E$$uFrascati 001274855 700__ $$aCitterio, M$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$aDunford, M$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2075062$$9#BEARD#$$aDrake, G$$uArgonne 001274855 700__ $$aBeretta, M$$uFrascati 001274855 700__ $$aGenat, JF$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2073932$$9#BEARD#$$aAnnovi, A$$uFrascati 001274855 700__ $$aKim, YK$$uChicago U.$$uFermilab 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2078594$$9#BEARD#$$aKimura, N$$uWaseda U. 001274855 700__ $$aAndreazza, A$$uMilan U.$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$aKapliy, A$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$aKasten, M$$uIllinois U., Urbana 001274855 700__ $$aPiendibene, M$$uPisa U.$$uINFN, Pisa 001274855 700__ $$aNegri, A$$uPavia U.$$uINFN, Pavia 001274855 700__ $$aMeroni, C$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2075632$$9#BEARD#$$aGiannetti, P$$uINFN, Pisa 001274855 700__ $$aMelachrinos, C$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$aHoff, J$$uFermilab 001274855 700__ $$aLiberali, V$$uMilan U.$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$aMcCarn, A$$uIllinois U., Urbana 001274855 700__ $$aNeubauer, M$$uIllinois U., Urbana 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2077600$$9#BEARD#$$aTang, F$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2073571$$9#BEARD#$$aShochet, M$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$aStabile, A$$uMilan U.$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$aSartori, L$$uFerrara U. 001274855 700__ $$aSabatini, F$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2073591$$9#BEARD#$$aProudfoot, J$$uArgonne 001274855 700__ $$aRiva, M$$uMilan U.$$uINFN, Milan 001274855 700__ $$aLiu, T$$uFermilab 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2081414$$9#BEARD#$$aPunzi, G$$uPisa U.$$uINFN, Pisa 001274855 700__ $$aVercesi, V$$uINFN, Pavia 001274855 700__ $$aTuggle, J$$uChicago U. 001274855 700__ $$aTodri, A$$uFermilab 001274855 700__ $$aTripiccione, R$$uFerrara U. 001274855 700__ $$aLanza, A$$iINFN, Pavia 001274855 700__ $$aWu, J$$uFermilab 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2074066$$9#BEARD#$$aYorita, K$$uWaseda U. 001274855 700__ $$0AUTHOR|(CDS)2077433$$9#BEARD#$$aVolpi, G$$uINFN, Pisa$$uPisa U. 001274855 700__ $$aVitullo, R.A$$uINFN, Pisa 001274855 700__ $$aSacco, I$$uPisa, Scuola Normale Superiore 001274855 710__ $$5PH-EP 001274855 859__ [email protected] 001274855 859__ [email protected] 001274855 8564_ $$uhttp://cds.cern.ch/record/1265632$$yOriginal Communication (restricted to ATLAS) 001274855 8564_ $$uhttp://cds.cern.ch/record/1274855/files/ATL-DAQ-PROC-2010-014.pdf$$zStamped by WebSubmit: 30/06/2010 001274855 916__ $$sn$$w201070 001274855 960__ $$a91 001274855 961__ $$c20100727$$h0927$$lCER01$$x20100727 001274855 963__ $$aPUBLIC 001274855 962__ $$b1237811$$nlisbon20100524 001274855 970__ $$a000708352CER 001274855 980__ $$aINTNOTEATLASPUBL 001274855 980__ $$aConferencePaper 001274855 980__ $$aPreprint
