Product Description

Two of the West’s most legendary figures search for the demon buffalo that haunts them both! They called him Wild Bill Hickok (Charles Bronson, Breakheart Pass). The Prince of Pistoleers. A frontier adventurer and killer of men. Now, in his last years, he is an old gunfighter plagued by fears and driven by a need to make peace with himself. The white buffalo is his constant nightmare. He must find the fabled beast and destroy it…before it destroys him. He was Crazy Horse (Will Sampson, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest). The greatest of all Sioux chiefs. A warrior of dignity and pride. Now, as a father who searches for the legendary albino buffalo so that the spirit of his dead child can go to heaven, he will stop at nothing to obtain the sacred white pelt. J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone, Cape Fear, Murphy’s Law) directs this heart-stopping, one-of-a-kind western with a brilliant supporting cast that includes Jack Warden (Billy Two Hats), Clint Walker (More Dead Than Alive), Slim Pickens (Blazing Saddles), Stuart Whitman (The Comancheros), John Carradine (Stagecoach) and Kim Novak (Vertigo).

Finally, but too bad it's not a real DVD...

Finally, but too bad it's not a real DVD...
It's is a sad day indeed when a Bronson 70's action flick doesn't warrant an official pressed DVD. Looks like the major studios are opting for selling DVD-R's now. I made the mistake to order Lee Van Cleef's El Condor 'DVD-R on Demand' from the Warner Brothers 'archive' program and it played with digital artifacts up to the halfway point at which it stopped playing altogether. I see from some of the other MGM Archive title reviews that many are experiencing the same poor playback issues from the MGM 'Burn on Demand' titles as well. Maybe they could use some tips from the real bootleggers...As far as the film itself, classic!! It is not a strait-forward western, it is more a mystical, surreal adventure tale dealing with the psychology of legends and the myth-isism and ending of the old west. Bronson as Hickock is as the old White Spike himself - the last of a dying breed and the end of an era, hiding his own legend behind dark sunglasses as the buffalo hides his legend in the camoflouge of the snow covered mountains. The stellar cast of actors includes Bronson, Will Sampson, Stuart Whitman, Slim Pickens, Clint Walker, Jack Warden and Kim Novak. All are written great character parts and the script uses some of the most authentic sounding Old West dialouge I think I've ever heard in any western to date. Just listen to the words and phrases used to described things and events. The dialouge/hand gestures of the natives were superior as well. Great research and writing on somebodys part. There's lotsa talk about the Spike not looking real, but as I see this film, it was never supposed to look so real and works well within this context. Sure it's limited 70's effects, but check out the original poster artwork, the buffalo is twenty feet tall. It's not even believed by townsfolk that a white buffalo still exists. The Buffalo represents the things of dreams and nightmares, the things of which fantasy and legends are made. Like Hickock himself. When finally confronted by the beast, Hickock hesitates in reflection and awe while the chief, who is hunting for a different reason, thinks only to kill. Also deserving mention is John Barry's creepy and mystically surreal score which is also available on limited edition CD. Barry scored to reflect the surreal nature of the film as opposeed to a traditional western-type score. Great decision on his part and shows he understood the true nature of the film. Barry makes a great scoring decision and really elevates the dreamlike atmosphere of the film.MGM remastered and released The White Buffalo on official DVD in Japan waaay back in 2003 with real cover art(along with Bronson's From Noon til Three). If MGM cant pay the US the same respect, I'll keep watching my Japanese copy. This cover art is pathetic, as with all of these archive DVDR releases. I guess you'll have to pick it up if you don't have a copy, but I hate to see these guys encouraged with less than quality releases.Let's hope the remaining unreleased Bronson films, Stone Killer and Noon til Three, get real releases with real transfers as opposed to this DVD-R or the recent Telefon transfer travesty. I mean, c'mom MGM, it's Bronson we're talking about here.....

Richard Sales' book made into film has returned for purchase again, finally. It stars Charels Bronson, Will Sampson and Jack Warden in Dino De Laurentis' bigger than life production. It's the story of 'Wild' Bill Hickok and Chief Crazy Horse supposedly based on a true event where the two men met to fight the same nightmare that haunted them both. At this time, Hickok was dying from syphillis and Crazy horse would soon fight his last battle. The two men become friends as they hunt the White Spike. Hickok because he is terrified of the nightmares he has of it and Crazy Horse to wrap his child killed by the Buffalo as it stampeded through his village. Crazy horse must wrap the child in the white buffalo hide so she can enter the Great Indian after-Life. Jack Warden is also along as Hickok's best friend, although his reasons are monetary only. The White Buffalo, built by Carlo Rambaldi, has been said to appear fake on the screen, but this two ton terror appears real enough to bring chills to you as it terrorizes the western mountains. Rambaldi wanted to achieve a 'dream-like' effect since both men were hunting a 'nightmare. He has more than succeeded. In the end both Hickok and Crazy Horse both bring it down and Hickok loses his friend Jack Warden because he gives the hide to Crazy Horse, a hide that would have brought $2000 back then. It is also when Crazy Horse finds out his 'friend' is the one and only Wild Bill Hickok, enemy of his people for shooting their Peacemaker years ago. Crazy Horse says, though they part as 'brothers, they will never meet that way again. Richard Sales did much research on the two 'brothers' and the story is sworn to be true. In the end, Hickok and Crazy Horse die the same year, each by violent methods. A plus in this film, although a small role, is the beautiful Kim Novak as "Poker Jenny", a love of Hickoks. This film is a DVD-R version, but even though worthy of being released as a regular DVD, the picture and sound are absolutely perfect. The snowy mountains of the old west could not have looked more beautiful. Buy this one before it's gone again. You won't regret it.

Even though this is not a true Crazy Horse story this is still a very good plot and storyline, and historical fantasy is awesome like Titanic with Jack&Rose or Last of the Mohicans, movies based off real events just with fictional characters and plots inserted in! Love that they include Native Hand Talk which is what American Sign Language was originally derived from, good representation of the people at the time and shares the view of both parties surrounding the story very well!!

In “The White Buffalo” Charles Bronson is surprisingly effective as Wild Bill Hickock. He’s playing a somewhat vulnerable Hickock towards the end of his life—plagued by dreams of a rampaging white buffalo. Unbeknownst to Hickock this same buffalo has attacked Crazy Horse’s tribe. “The White Buffalo” is sort of a Western/Monster movie hybrid. There’s something supernatural/spiritual about The White Buffalo, although no explanation for it is provided in the film. Why it attacks the Indian village; and why Hickock is having prophetic dreams about it are left as mysteries.

Unfortunately, the animatronic buffalo is not convincing at all. I’m sure audiences howled with laughter when they saw it. But if you can overlook that, it’s actually quite a good western—I think it ranks with “Unforgiven” and “The Shootist” as a great western actor’s farewell to the genre. And it’s certainly superior to Steve McQueen’s last western, “Tom Horn.”

It has a wonderful supporting cast including Slim Pickens (who was also in “Tom Horn”), John Carradine (who was also in “The Shootist”), Kim Novak, Clint Walker and, most notably, Will Sampson as Crazy Horse.

The DVD looks good, but has no extras whatsoever. It doesn’t even have a main menu. It’s one of those DVDs where the movie starts playing as soon as you pop it in the machine.

But the quality of the movie makes up for the deficiencies of the DVD package.

Very Dino de Laurentiis in the buffalo scenes. Bronson does as nice job, as does Will Sampson, packed with great character actors of the genre.

The special effects were typical for the pre-CGI era. The acting wouldn't win any Oscars, but the combination of using many of the classic old-timey western actors with rarely used period language just made this movie a real pleasure to watch. Unfortunately, seeing Clint Walker as a "Heavy", instead of his usual hero status, was a little disconcerting. If you are a western fan you'll like this flick.

This movie is an acquired taste and not for most people, especially millennials today. If you grew up in the 1970's-1980's with HBO, then you probably watched this movie a hundred times like me. It's nostalgic and brings back a lot of fun memories.

Of course, I have to return it since half the movies that are delivered from Amazon arrived cracked and damaged.

I saw this movie before when it was shown on TV. Many scenes and dialog were redacted! This DVD shows the full movie and and paints an picture of two great, warriors who are seeking redemption! Hickock who is going blind and his constant fear of death and Crazy Horse who lost his status as a great chief and must display extreme courage which will redeem his spirit! The personal bond these men form is very special and makes the movie very entertaining!

I remember watching this movie in T.V. Back then I couldn’t tell what I liked about it. I just felt it was different. I know that the special effects might have grown a bit old, but the acting is good, the feeling of adventure is there , lots of interesting characters, a moving story and a good amount of Bronson’s close ups and shootouts.
